The reason is fairly simple. Castles were a strong point and a defensible position when under attack, sometimes for weeks. With the coming of gunpowder and cannons, they were no longer able to defend them for a long period and for that reason became obsolete. The nobility then spent their money on creating an elaborate dwelling instead of a castle.

Usually, lords lived in manor houses, which were mansions on the manorial estates. In times of upheaval, they lived in castles, if they had them. There were some lords who lived in towns or cities, where they would have occupied some of the better homes.
There are different reasons as to why castles became palatial. One main reason is because castles were no longer needed for defense, therefore were turned into palatial castles where people were free to visit and stay in.
