There are two things wrong with this question. One is the assumption that knights were "highly valued " and the second is the answer below. The real facts is the knights were more like gangs and were feared. They raped women, burned villages, and stole from people. They ran rampant and it is only in modern history that they have been given the crown of heros and saving the damsel in distress. Kings were seen as having been granted their crowns from God, but not knights. A young man became a knight by his family sending him to another noble family at 7 years old where he began as a page and then at the age of 21 became a knight. The Catholic Church stepped in when the knights really got out of hand and made them take an oath to help people rather than rob them. They feared the church so did what they were told.
