Most of the colonists were descended from people who came from Britain. Many of them still have relatives in Britain. They had been ruled by the king for their whole life and many of them respected the king and his government. To rebel was thus a huge step. It was also risky. The war would be costly and Britain had large military resources. It was possible to lose and if they lost, they would not only lose the cost of the war, but the British government would no doubt impose punitive measures on everybody and hang the leaders.
