During some times, people feared knights, especially after wars when the knights were out of work and had to resort to stealing things to stay alive.
In some places people feared hordes of warriors from the East, though that didn't last long.
But I think the people who were feared the most were those who showed clear symptoms of the Black Death.
Most common people of the Middle Ages were of the serf class, who were primarily agricultural and were not usually soldiers. They needed protection for a number of reasons, which included anarchy during wars and periods of migration by invading peoples, raids by Vikings or Magyars, predations of neighboring lords, drought and famine, and natural disasters. The protection was the responsibility of the lords.
There was a lot to be afraid of. They lived in a state of war most of he time and there was not a government to help protect the people. Then there was disease, accidents, and murder that could happen at any time.
Yes, they didn't understand the science of the eclipses. Most science was based on superstition.
