It is not. A solid rock base which will support the weight of the structure is the best. If it were built on sand it would soon sink. It is good to have plenty of sand around though, to build the ramps needed to transport the stones.

If you wanted to move a stone from one spot to another in the desert, you'd need something that would roll across sand. Scientists believe the Egyptians used some type of roller system, using slaves to pull the rollers across the sand.

well in a desert there is a lot of sandstorms after a couple of years the sand starts to build up around the pyramid. In a couple of thousands of years it becomes buried in sand.
