Railroads are faster, carry more goods, can travel through all kinds of weather, can go anywhere track can be laid, people live on land, not the water. Railroads generally speaking use less fuel to transport goods than any other type of vehicle. Boats can sink in canals. It's easier to lay track on the ground than to dig a canal in the ground. There is more land than water where people live.
They were quicker, as canal boats were horse-drawn. Trains could reach around 30 miles an hour. Railway tracks were also much easier to construct than canals.
