The death of Martin Luther King Jr.
America had had enough "draft riots" at that time (1960s). America had experienced "draft riots" in the US Civil War (1860s) also, but apparently had forgotten those lessons from that earlier century.

The US American sports people played in the 1860s were rather limited. Some of them included golf, boxing, cricket, baseball and rowing among others.
The Union soldiers were mostly volunteers early in the war, but the draft was used heavily by the end of the war. The draft officially began in the summer of 1863. Some of the larger cities experienced draft riots. This occurred in New York, Buffalo, Philadelphia, and Baltimore. Hundreds (perhaps up to 2000) died in these riots. One way these cities dealt with the riots was to use immigration. Immigrant families received immediate citizenship if one male would volunteer for the war. Thousands of Irish and German families came to the US to take up this offer. The riots in New York City comprised the largest insurrection in US history. Sadly they were racist and 11 Black men were hanged and a Black orphanage was burned. Lincoln was forced to send 20,000 troops from Gettysburg and used cannons to end the riots.
Like the US Civil War in the 1860s the Vietnam War in the 1960s divided America.
The US Civil War & Vietnam War experienced draft riots. These were physical violent protests against the military draft (conscription).
The cities population grew immense and the more they grew, certain sections became occupied by certain ethnic groups: Chinatown, Little Havana, etc. Also with all of the immigrants, jobs were occupied by them especially in factories.
