Actually, servants to the king were minor nobles sons, daughter and themselves. They took care of the needs of the queen and king. That is what "ladies in waiting" were. It was considered to be a honor to work in the king's household. The hope was that the sons/daughters would find a good match in court or come to the attention of the king/queen and gain favor for the family.
