Shar pei's have been bred to be fighting dogs. The loose skin, or wrinkles, allows the dog to be bitten by other dogs without causing damage to internal organs. It also allows the dog to turn around and bite the apposing dog should it grab the Shar Pei's skin.
The most distinctive part of a Shar Pei is the deep wrinkles. Also these gorgeous chinese dogs have a rather strange blue-black tongue. The wrinkles make it easier for this type of dog to twist away if it has been grabbed by another dog whilst in a fight. It is a compact and square dog, and it's head is slightly larger than its body.
