In the early days of radio the equipment was quite bulky and was certainly not portable. Therefore radios were kept on tables or shelves and people used to sit round the radio in order to listen to their favorite programs. Nowadays, of course, radios can be very small and therefore this is no longer necessary.
The FM radio was invented in 1933. It was invented by the inventor Edwin Howard Armstrong. He invented the frequency that allows radios to work.
