U-boat stands for underwater boat. They were essentially the first submarine. No other countries had these which made them very dangerous. Also sonar wasn't very developed so they couldn't detect them. The U-boats also had torpedoes to sink enemy vessels. Also, enemy vessels didn't really have any weapons tocounter the U-boat.
