The Jews, setting themselves apart as "God's Chosen People", never became assimilated into the societies they were living in. Because of this, they served as convenient scapegoats. Most Europeans were Christians and appeared like average people. But the Jews persisted in their effort to be different, wearing special symbols and clothing to signify their specialness. The average European resented the Jews setting themselves up as special people.
The musical "Fiddler on the Roof" portrayed the Jews in Russia as regarding Jewish Tradition as paramount. The men generally wore prayer shawls and other symbolic items to indicate that they were Jews and not Russians.
