Like all polytheistic practices, there were multiple Gods to cover multiple areas, believing that one God cannot cover them all. It is basically superstition with man inventing or adopting deities as they need them. The early philistines for instance had God of the valleys, gods of the mountains, harvest and planting gods, gods of war, etc,etc. This was a commong practice with the Greeks and the Romans also, having gods of love, of the sea, of war,etc. These deities were amazing human like in conduct for they were fomulated by the minds of men.
