The ancient Indians were nomads because they did not have enough resources to plant food they traveled from place to place looking for or following food. deer, buffulo, antalope, etc.
That is because when food in one place ran short they moved to find more so that the food in the other place could regrow and also because they did not have enough resources to plant food .

The only available food source on the Great Plains was the large, roaming herds of elk, deer and buffalo (bison). It was around a million square miles of nothing much more than grass, which supported huge numbers of game animals (and their predators) but would not support anyone wishing to live on native plants.

So, anyone who wanted to hunt the game animals had to be constantly mobile, since these huge herds slowly migrated twice every year - southwards in the autumn (fall), northwards in the spring. A hunter on foot would soon find himself completely alone with no chance of killing any animal for food - horses provided the only practical means of following the herds. Before horses became available there were almost no people on the Great Plains of North America.

Horses were re-introduced to the Americas by Europeans, so in that sense Europeans were totally responsible for creating the nomadic Plains culture; it was also Europeans who ended it.

The Plains tribes were in essence nomadic. They moved with the seasons and they moved following the buffalo herd. They also moved for certain social events and gatherings. They would settle in the area and then move so the earth mother could recover from their settlement.

During the early period of civilization, many people lived a nomadic life. Thousands of years ago, cities had not yet been established, and the inhabitants of a region would migrate from place to place in search of food, shelter, and companionship (the men might seek wives from other clan or kinship groups). But gradually, as cities were established, people began to settle around these urban centers, many of which were near a river (necessary for trade as well as for irrigating crops); having a permanent place to live became the norm. But it did not become the norm for everyone: there were native peoples who preferred maintaining a nomadic lifestyle. Some lived in the Great Plains (they would come to be referred to as Indians), and even into the 1700s, they seemed happiest living close to nature. Their culture had deep respect for the outdoors: they loved the vast expanses of land on the plains, and they could hunt bison, elk, or antelope for food. Long after cities were established, the Plains Indians wanted to continue their traditions and live the nomadic life their ancestors had lived.

The first Native Americans were nomadic because they had to follow their food and water sources. The less personal belongings they had to carry around, the better.
