Nuclear arms race.
USSR and the US in the Cold War and Nuclear Arms Race
US: 1945. USSR: 1949
The hydrogen bomb was the main factor. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wrong! The nuclear arms race began in 1939 when nuclear fission was discovered. The race was between Germany, England, and the USSR (using information from spies in the English program). By the time the US entered the nuclear arms race England merged their project with the US Manhattan Project, Germany had withdrawn (nobody else knew this) limiting their project to prototype nuclear reactors only with the goal of nuclear power plants after Germany won the war. So long before the first use of nuclear weapons, ending WW2 the nuclear arms race between the US and USSR was already well in place.
The race to build more atomic bombs between the US and the USSR during the Cold War was called the Arms Race. It was a period of intense competition and escalation of nuclear weapons development between the two superpowers.
1939 to 1989 The race began between Nazi Germany and England in 1939. The USSR began spying on the work in England. Nazi Germany quietly withdrew about 1942 as the US entered and took over the work from England. The US completed the first atomic bombs in 1945. The USSR completed their first atomic bomb using info from their spies in 1949. The nuclear arms race between the US and USSR officially ended in 1989.
SALT, the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty, was the agreement signed by the US and USSR to limit the production of nuclear weapons.
The nuclear bomb AKA the cold war. The cold war was an arms race against the USSR and the US to see who could get the most destructive and best nuclear weapon of all time.
USSR
Richard Nixon believed it was necessary to enter the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks in order for the US and USSR to reduce nuclear forces. It was a an eventual success.
The accumulation of nuclear arms shaped the cold war in many ways. When the us first started building and testing nuclear arms, the soviet union was furious and immediately began testing. Then the soviets successfully test their nuclear weapon. The u.s found this out out because a us spy plane found traces of nuclear material in the air.
