Why were the US not Neutral when entering World War 1?

The reson the U.S. were not neutral entering the war is because as U.S. cargo ships had been going through Britain and other allied countries Germany would bomb them. This caused the deaths of U.S. civillians. The U.S. asked Germany to stop and they did not compmly.
