Because it turned the war into an official crusade against slavery. And it made it impossible for Britain and France to aid the Confederates, as this would make them look pro-slavery themselves - so it gave the North a new strategic advantage.

However some Abolitionists complained that the Proclamation did not go far enough, as it allowed slavery to continue in the slave-states that had remained loyal.
