Apparently, there is a risk that when the weapon is fired, the bolt could become a projectile itself travelling rearward. This would cause serious injury or worse to the shooter. Sears began the recall several years ago and was paying a $160.00 finders fee. Sears now offers a $50.00 gift card for the bolt. * Many people say that the guns shoot fine and are safe - so long as you check and make sure the bolt retaining screw on the left side of the receiver is in good shape and is tight. Be safe.
Made by High Standard for Sears in the 1950's.
That's rather difficult. To settle a lawsuit, Sears recalled the bolts (just the bolts!) of almost all 583.xx 12 gauge shotguns by offering $50 for each one returned.

The 16-gauge JC Higgins bolt-action shotgun does not use a clip; instead, it typically has a magazine that holds shells. Most bolt-action shotguns are designed to feed shells one at a time from the magazine into the chamber. If you are looking for specific loading instructions or details about your model, consulting the owner's manual or a knowledgeable gunsmith is advisable.
Bolt action shotguns in usable condition will retail for $100 - $125. They could have been made anytime from 1908 to 1960. With the rest of the markings on the gun, we might be able to identify the actual manufacturer's model number and determine a range of dates when that model was produced.

They were made in the 1950s. In 2005, Sears instituted a safety recall on their bolt action shotguns in that model. This is a non-repairable problem. Sears was reported to be offering a $50 gift card in exchange for the bolt from these shotguns (missing bolt makes them nonshootable)

The J.C. Higgins 16 gauge shotgun does not use a clip; it is a break-action or pump-action firearm that typically uses a magazine tube or operates on a single-shell basis, depending on the model. These shotguns are designed to load individual shells directly into the chamber or magazine rather than utilizing a detachable clip. Always consult the specific model's manual for accurate loading instructions.
