The importance of the middle ages is that the middle ages shows us how brutal man kind can be. Such as when villages were ransacked by invaders. Also this is the time period in which the Bubonic Plague occurs and introduces man kind to a disease as deadly as so.

The Middle Ages was a time between the fall of Rome and the Age of Exploration, about 1000 years. During the Middle Ages the following happened.

  • Migrating Germanic tribes set up kingdoms, established legal codes, developed new traditions based on a combination of Germanic and Roman culture.
  • Islam came into being, developed, and spread like lightening
  • After an Islamic invasion of Spain, Christian Spanish kingdoms came into being, and fought for the next 700 years, ultimately reconquering Spain.
  • Spain, during the time of the Reconquest, had vibrant culture, which spread knowledge through much of Western Europe.
  • Celtic monasteries kept learning alive in the North.
  • Vikings raided and traded through almost all of Europe.
  • Vikings were invited to rule Russian city states, and to govern Normandy.
  • Bede wrote a history of Britain, in the course of which he established our system for dates.
  • Germanic groups invaded Britain, establishing a set of kingdoms, from which England is descended.
  • Charlemagne took control of a country in what is now France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, the western half of Austria, Switzerland, the northern half of Italy, and part of Spain.
  • Charlemagne's empire divided into what is now France and what is now Germany.
  • England united and came under Norman control.
  • Troubadours, and minstrels sang all over western Europe. Music developed and changed.
  • The legends of King Arthur spread with the troubadours. From them the concepts of a code of chivalry and courtly love developed.
  • Many things were invented, such as clocks, horse shoes, and wheel barrows, things we use today.
  • Dante wrote The Divine Comedy.
  • Thomas Malory wrote Le Morte d'Arthur.
  • Geoffrey Chaucer wrote The Canterbury Tales.
  • Beowulf was written.
  • The Neibelungenlied was written.
  • Joan of Arc, a peasant girl, became head of the French Army at the age of 17, and turned the Hundred Years War in favor of the French.
  • Someone in the Netherlands invented the printing press, which was later used by Gutenberg in Mainz to produce the Bible, the first major book printed.
  • Engraving, as a method of printing, was invented.
  • The lower case was invented.
  • A number of universities were founded.
  • Greek Philosophical works were translated into Latin - from Arabic - and became important in the universities.

During the Middle Ages, millions of people lived, fell in love, married, recovered from illnesses, had children, raised their young, helped their neighbors, made a living, and died to be mourned. Not all of them were brutal. Not all of them were miserable. Some actually loved life.
