This is merely my opinion as I make no claims to having inside knowledge of how madmen think. It would seem to me that them being in the so called financial center of the western world, to damage or destroy them would cause chaos in this country. Surprise didn't work. Also their size made them easy to locate for inexperienced pilots. The attacks were intended to terrify the citizenry and cripple our government and our financial base. Again, the attackers underestimated our preplanning and our resiliency. They wanted to cripple the financial economy of the Americans. There is word going through the grapevine that the President was warned on such an attack, but it's heresay thus far and an investigation is in the works. However, America was NOT prepared for this attack and it could have been far worse if the people on that last plane hadn't over-taken the terrorists. The Trade Center rocked the world and left Americans in shock to realize that they could be attacked on native soil. The only other attack in the most past recent history is Pearl Harbor.
