The Duckboard was used for something the soldiers could walk on, in heavy rain it was just a little easiers to walk on than the mud because their feet didn't sink. sometimes the boards would be used to reinforce the side of the trenches as well.
Duckboards are boards nailed crosswise across bearers ( like railway sleepers in arrangement), laid across muddy soil to spread the weight of traffic. Without them, the soldiers in the trenches would just have sunk slowly into the ground - as many did who stepped off the duckboards.

The new trenches in World War 1 were typically dug in zigzag patterns to help minimize the impact of enemy fire. They were deeper and more elaborate than the earlier trenches, often consisting of multiple levels to allow for better protection and mobility. They were typically equipped with sandbags, barbed wire, duckboards, and machine gun posts.

Wooden duckboards (palletlike wood creations, used to elavte soldiers from the mud), rats, mud, abandoned equipment and the odd dead body that happened to fall there.
The Purpose of a Drainage Ditch was the bottom of the trenches where the soil turned very muddy. It held the muddy water, rubbish and occasionally excretement and stopped the soldiers from stepping on it with Duckboards.
The trenches were called saps and the people who dug them were called sappers.
