because back before timezones, every city would have their own time. So people traveling by train from New York to New Jersey would have to change their watches every time they entered a new city. The differences in time weren't nice numbers either, from Albany to Dover, the change in time might be 17 minutes. Due to increased travel and industry using the railroad, they (the world) adopted the 24 time zones.
