People bow as a way of showing submission and weakness. This is intended to show the god they are praying to that they are at its will and are open to it. In a way, you could say they are 'surrendering' to the God in a plea of help or advise. Consider that if you were to do the opposite (stand up tall and assertive) you would be implying that you are more powerful than the god and instead of asking for help, it could be seen as you demanding help.
