Because having said that he could prove it, he had to admit that he could not. Although the heliocentric theory is accepted now, it was not accepted in Galileo's lifetime. After his death scientific knowledge advanced to the point that everyone was forced to admit it was right.
But Galileo was not right, given the state of scientific knowledge during his lifetime.
Because at the time, the Catholic church was an entirely political organisation, and politicians don't like being told they are completely and utterly wrong. So they require him to make th public denial, or face excommunication (banning from the church, which was a lot more severe to people in those days) or possibly death.
The reason why galileo denyed his theory is because the church would have killed him other wise
No. Galileo was a man who seeked for the truth, and when one discovers the truth, why would one need to deny it? Instead of denying the truth, and accepting lies, I would rather do everything in my power to combat the oppressors who wish to bury the truth, and do my best to bury the lie whilst upholding the truth. By allowing people of power to hide something important, the wolrd itself will not progress, and other people will be affected as a repercussion of this action. In the end, the people who hid it in the first place might be the last to suffer, but they will end up receiving the harshest punishment when the time comes.
true
This was because Catholic teachings back then were based on the idea that the Earth was the center of the Universe. Threatened by torture, Galileo was forced to deny that the Earth moves and that the Sun was the center of the Universe.

Neither. It is a hypothesis which may be true until proved or proved to be false.
something is not true
Irrefutable evidence is the only means that something is proved to be true.

TRUE!!
FALSE
The relative pronoun is that (relates to the noun 'story')."The unlikely story that he told proved to be true."
An axiom is a self-evident statement that is assumed to be true. A theorem is proved to be true.
true
Nobody has proved that. Indeed the evidence is that the opposite is true.
