You cannot convert Windows Movie Maker (.MSWMM) files at all since they are in 'project' form. The only way to change a MSWMM to a standard format is through the Publishing/Finishing/Saving process.
Windows Movie Maker is a persnickety program. Instead of saving the project, Publish or Finish it instead. You can always import the video back into the program for more editing. But, it saves the frustration of not being able to Save.
In Windows Movie Maker, the project has to be Published/Finished/Saved before it is converted to a format that can be uploaded to YouTube.Publish/Finish the movie project in Windows Movie Maker. Name it and choose a destination to save it on your computer. Once Publishing/Finishing/Saving has been achieved, locate the file and upload it to YouTube.
Is it possible that you closed the project without saving it? That is one way the clips/collections will disappear. Saving a project (without publishing/finishing it) is the best way to ensure the media you have included to date is available in a Collection folder and the project itself.Note:Do not move/change/delete media used in Windows Movie Maker projects before you have Published/Finished the video, as the program must be able to locate the original source files.

You can't reformat a Windows Movie Maker project file (.MSWMM). Conversion to Standard formats takes place during the mix-down (export) process of 'Publishing/Finishing/Saving' the movie.
Try Publishing or Finishing the movie instead of Saving it.Saving only 'saves the project file'. And that feature is known to be rather persnickety on many versions of Windows Movie Maker.
Are you trying to make the folder while saving your wmm project? Cause that may be the problem.. try going out of wmm and go into "my documents" and try doing it there..and if that doesn't work..I'm not sure =/ & just save your project on your desktop then later drag it into "addontfx" file..after you create it (:
What setting are you attempting to save the video in? If the project is too large, it could take a long time to publish/save. Try saving it in compressed (or in a different setting).
Finalizing a Windows Movie Maker project is called Publishing (or Finishing the Movie in earlier versions of the program).
Try Publishing/Finishing the video clip instead of just 'saving' the project file. Sometimes that helps. Otherwise, download the Youtube clip again and make sure the file is not corrupt before importing it into your project.
A Windows Movie Maker project file is in .MSWMMformat.
