After The Battle of Hastings, he returned to Hastings. From there he marched to Romney, which he sacked because the people there had earlier killed some of his soldiers who had gotten separated from the main army. After that, he marched and took Dover without a fight, then took the Roman road to Canterbury and then Rochester. He marched to Southwark where he attempted to cross London Bridge, but was repulsed. He retaliated by burning Southwark to the ground. After that, he marched west to Wallingford, where he crossed the Thames. There, the Archbishop of Canterbury submitted to him. After that he marched east to Berkhamsted, where pretty much the rest of the nobles of England, including the king-elect Edgar the Aetheling, submitted to him.
I'm not sure what the timeframe of all these events are; some say all this happened by the end of October, while others say that William fell ill at Canterbury and spent the month of November there, and finished the conquest at the beginning of December.
