Shell Keep castles were built in the year 1172! +++ Not sure where the adjective "shell" comes from, but castles with a keep - the central building in the complex, and the main accommodation - were built mainly in the few centuries of the Mediaeval period , not just in one arbitrary year.

It was built in the 12th century by William the conquerer. They were built to replace motte and bailey castles, as they were easy to destroy, because they were built out of wood. However, the stone keep were made out of stone, and so they were hard to defeat!!
motte and bailey castles were the first castles built by william and later stone castles came around they were first rectangular but then were made circular which was better defence. e.t.c. ;-)

There have been several "Winsor Castles" built on the same site. the original was built by William the Conquerer and was probably fairly makeshift as it was built on a heap of chalk and probably took the form of a mott and bailey castle. Later versions including the one you see today are stone built.
