How did the word toilet come about?
Ir appeared in France in the 14th Century as a cover for clothes, from a similar word meaning 'cloth net'. From this the word evolved into the act of getting dressed. In the early 16th Century it became the word for a dressing room. In the early 19th Century the word referred to a dressing room with a toilet or lavatory. A little later the word referred to a dressing room with a toilet and a bath. The word slightly changes its meaning in accordance with modern hygienic conditions and the individuals imterpretation
How were women treated in the 1600's?
The 1600s were a time marked by the Scientific Revolution. During this time, women were treated as inferior being who were meant to tend to the house and tend to children. During this time, a centuries-long debate known as the Querreles des Femmes was occurring in which men argued that women were not capable of higher thinking because their skulls were smaller. They also said that because women's hips were wider, they were naturally meant to be mothers and not to be involved in scientific affairs. Overall, women were treated with little dignity and as intellectually inferior to their male counterparts. They were also not aloud to go to the theater and or act on the stage.

During the 1980's, women were beginning to spread from the "housewife" image to the "working mother", since approx. a fourth of women who worked during WWII had stayed at their jobs - a considerable increase in comparison to the number of women who left their jobs in after the end of WWI. And as American society progressed, women slowly transitioned to become working citizens. In the 1990's, the U.S. Dept. of Labor issued the Glass Ceiling Commission to create more equal opportunity for women in the workplace. Janet Reno was appointed as the first lady Attorney General.
What impact did the women have in the western expasion?
In the western expansion, women played several roles. In the Homestead Act of 1863, anyone over the age of 21 could claim 160 acres of undeveloped land as long as they stayed there for 5 years, built a home, and farmed the land. In many cases, the men would need to travel elsewhere for work, and the women would stay behind to hold the land. Women also helped to "civilize" towns which had been started by men. As men began to marry, they started to settle down, and there were fewer saloons and brothels. More homes were built, as women did not want to live in tents. Children were born, so there became a need for schools. General stores became popular, selling not only farming supplies, but food staples and fabrics for clothing. Women were also actively involved in the farming of the land and the building of homes.
