This condition is called "dieseling" where the engine continues to run on after the ignition key has been turned off. It means that your engine timing is way off ... a complete tune-up of this engine should end this situation.

i had the problem with my 97 f150, the power wire to the computer had melted on the manifold and had to be replaced, check the wire to see if its grounding out
That is a good possibility.It also could be running lean and causing it to smell that way.If it starts running poorly or wont accelerate then you will have to replace it. Need 2 find out why IT's running Rich.
Check your ignitor and the coil. They are located one on top of the other.
