The compatability of apps and Macs depends on how old either is. Apple keeps compatability for several years, but at some point the old apps simply won't run on the newest Macs. This is a moving timeline. There is not easy answer except that all new apps require an Intel CPU. But some apps reguire a 32 or 64 bit processor, so even if you have a fairly new Mac, it may not run all the newest apps that you think could/should run on it. There is a site called oldapps.com where you can find some version of new apps that will work on older machines. Check the system requirements and good luck!
