try re-installing gtk+ with the command:
sudo apt-get install gtk2-engines-pixbuf
as admin. then go to settings (the wrench) > Options > Personal Stuff > Appearance > Use Gtk+ theme
if gtk+ theme is grey, then try restarting chrome and then trying again, If that doesn't work, try restarting your computer and then trying again.
