With out a make model and year of the engine I am guessing.
First, make sure the cam(s) are timed correctly. If there a distributor in this car, make sure it is timed correctly also. I seem to always get this in wrong at first.
Second, do some basic checks, like Compression; Spark; Fuel.
Third, check to see if the plastic was bad on the Car, inside the air cleaner.
Fourth, my all time favorite thing to ask myself is whether I remembered to take the rags out of the intake ports.
see if your spark plug are wet, change oil, with new filter.
incorrect ignition timing, no fuel pressure, or no spark.
blown motor .probably blown head gaskets or a cracked head with water on the cylinders causing hydraulic lock.
are you sure its just a blown head gasket?... if heads are warped due to overheating replacing the gasket wont help you will need new heads as well. You can get a Haynes Manual or Chiltons, they will give you step by step guidance on replacing your gasket.
Start with replacing the fuel filter.
Try replacing your spak plugs. I had the same problem with my 85 Monte Carlo.
The temperature sensor needs Replacing.
try replacing the starter
try replacing your battery maybe turn the key?
You probably didn't prime the fuel system.
You probably have a bad Electronic Control Module. They are notorious for going bad.
Sounds like coolant leak internally, bad head gaskets, cracked head, bad intake gaskets. If leaking into a cyl or more that cyl wont be firing right so raw gas can make it through.
