Depending on the model, the ability for the PlayStation 3 to play PlayStation 2 games can be seriously impaired or missing. The first PlayStation 3s (20 GB) contained the hardware to run PS2 games natively. 60 GB models NTSC also support PS2 games natively. 80 GB NTSC models with 4 USB ports can run PS2 games via emulation. 80 GB models with 2 USB ports, as well as all 160 GB models are completely incompatible with PS2 titles. If you absolutely need PS2 compatibility without purchasing a PS2 (which would probably be cheaper), purchase a 60 GB model.
Actually all ps3s can play ps2 games on them no matter what the gb. I have a 40gb ps3 and i play ps3 games on it all the time. But you have to go to the PlayStation Store and download the free ps2 content to play ps2 games on a ps3.
