If your iMessage is not working, turn your device all the way off. Turn it back on. Go to settings and then general and then time. Set time to automated time. Again, turn your device all the way off. Turn it back on. Open iMessage, and it should work. If not contact the Apple Store, or look further online.

Yes. IMessage is not the same as the text messaging you have in something like a Samsung phone. iMessage only works with other Apple devices that have iMessage.
