You are supposed to have unallocated disk space if you want to create more partitions. So if you want to split one partition in two you have to delete the partition and then using the unallocated space create two new partitions.

There are simpler ways to do that, for instance, using special software such as Partition Magic, Acronis disk editor and so on.

You have to create the primary partition, which will create a drive with assigned letter for you. Or you can create the extended partition where you can create logical drives it can be more than 1.

You can have one or more partitions on your hard drive. Of you have only one partition it will still ask you where you want to install the OS. Yes you can create more partitions if you have unallocated space on your hard drive. The xp installation program allows you to do that. Just read carefully what's asking you.

Is it better to partition a external hard drive?

In general, there is no reason to have more than one partition on an external hard drive. There are some specific cases where it might be desirable but you would know if you had a requirement like that.

What is the max hard disk Win 2000 recognize?

Windows 2000 can utilize the full capacity of any drive, providing that the BIOS can also see it. The maximum partition size for Windows 2000 is 256 terabytes, or about 256 times the size of the largest consumer drives available. A hard drive can have more than one partition on it, so even if the hard drive you had exceeded 256 terabytes, you could use the rest of the space by partitioning the remaining space.

Do external hard drives have a partition?

Modern disk drive construction more or less requires drives to have at least one partition. Whether the drive is internal or external is immaterial.
