The light should come on when you turn on the ignition without starting the engine. If it does not, then more likely than not, the bulb has burned out or been removed. If you just bought the vehicle, know that removing the bulb to hide an emissions problem is illegal.
It's the " service engine soon " light to the left of the gas gauge instead of the " check engine " light , like it is on my 1995 Ford Explorer
If your check engine light is staying on with the engine running , a malfunction has been detected with the emission control system . Have your Explorer scanned for any trouble codes to diagnose and repair the problem
On a 1998 Ford Explorer ( like my 1995 ) Either your engine coolant temperature is too high , your engine oil pressure is too low , or your fuel gauge is at or near empty ( any of those 3 things will turn on the " check gage " warning light )
hoe do you reset the check engine light in a 1995 land rover

The engine light is on when the engine computer has detected a malfunction and set a trouble code.
a malfunction has been detected with the emission control system If the light goes out , it means the problem has corrected itself If the light stays on continuously , the Explorer needs to be scanned for any trouble codes to diagnose and then repair the problem
Every sensor on the engine and transmission can cause the light to come on.
Turn on the ignition and look at the instruments. You will see the Check Engine Light come on for a few seconds and then go off. If you see the light it is working.
The easiest way to reset the check engine light on a 1995 Acura Integra is to unhook the battery for a few minutes. If the light is still on after hooking it up again, there is probably still a problem that needs to be fixed with the engine.
1995 and later model vehicles need an OBDII scanner to retrieve the diagnostic codes. AutoZone and other parts stores usually will scan free of charge if the check engine light is on.
