They weren't. A knight needed a horse that was not as heavy and could maneuver in battle. The knight's horse was trained to carry him knee to knee with the knight next to him. As if in a long line of armour. So, the horse was controlled with the legs and they were a special horse not for everyday riding. The suit of armour was about 45 pounds so not as heavy as it has been pictured ( today's army carries more weight) and it was an expensive item to own ( in today's standards the cost of armour was like the cost of a 5 bedroom house today).
