Polo's book was a best seller. He described places, people, and things that no one had ever seen. For men like Columbus it was a call to explore and to find ways to bring back the things people wanted. The man/country that found a water route to Asia would be very rich and dominate the waterways to Asia. This was motivated by riches, fame, and power.
