Your brake light switch is faulty. It is very difficult to fit the new one as it is a one shot switch (1 chance of putting it in properly).
I recently replaced my front and rear lights with led's. If the removal of the taillights is the same all you have to do is lower your tailgate and remove the 2 screws holding on the lights. pulling out the lights i had to use a screwdriver to work them out.
As long as it does not obscure your lights or license plate you can drive with your tailgate down.

Out of adjustment. Adjust the mounting of the switch so the brakes lights are off until you press the brake pedal.
lower the tailgate, remove the 2 screws on the side when you lower the tailgate, pull assembly out and replace
pull down the tailgate and there will be two screaws or nuts on the inside of the tailgate where the light means the tailgate remove them and wigle the light and should come out the bulbs are on the back of the light
You can install undercarriage lights to have them turn on with your dome lights on a 2005 Chevrolet Equinox by installing the LED tailgate light bar.
These are composite lights and the lens are not removable. Change the bulbs by removing the lights and unscrewing them from the rear,. additional info: The lenses are one peice housings that the bulbs fit into. You can remove the whole housing by unscrewing two screws inside the tailgate area with the tailgate down. The bulbs can be removed and the housings replaced with either fancy aftermarket ones made for your make and model, factory replacements or a junk yard find.
You should stop at a railroad crossing with mechanical gates and lights whenever the lights begin flashing. Do not attempt to cross while the gate is being closed.
On a 1996 Ford Explorer tail lights, If you lower or lift the tailgate there should be some screws on the inside jam of where the tailgate closes you will need to remove the screws, the light fixture may fall so have some one hold it while you take out the screws. Also you may need a torx head screwdriver.
