Its not that they come out of their shell to become bigger they become bigger and outgrow their shell and are forced to migrate to a new, bigger shell *ESSENTIAL*
it was dieing and was trying to save itself
Answer: The shell would have had to have it before the hermit crab moved in or something got stuck to it.
The shell that the hermit crab adopts and wears and changes many times throughout his decades long lifetime helps him in several ways. The hermit crab has a very delicate abdomen that is protected by the shell. Without this shell, his abdomen could become punctured very easily and the crab would die. The hermit crab also carries water in his shell to keep the abdomen moist. If it were to dry out, again, the hermit crab would die. The crab balances the salinity of the water within his shell by accessing fresh or salt water as needed. The shell is also his shelter, and protects him from predators. The ideal fitting shell will allow the hermit crab to pull fully inside and to block off the opening with his large pincer.
Try to get another shell that you have that is simmilar to the original one. Then I would pit the hermit crab in a small tank with the new shell ans see that he gets into it.
yes but why would you want to do such a cruel thing
Yes it can but it depends what kind of shell. The shell must be like a conch shell, but not the kind for snails. There would be not enough room for the crab to squeeze his body in. You need a shell with an opening a little bit bigger than the shell opening it already has on if you want it to change into the new shell. But most the time they do not change shells (I have had one for over a year and it still hasn't). I know you probably want it to change into the pretty new shell you bought or found but do not try to manually do it for the crab.
the crab will sooner or later die off DO NOT REMOVE THE HERMIT CRAB SHELL if a crab dies out of it dries out and its a slow death so for the sake of the crab DO NOT REMOVE THE CRAB SHELL
Don't do that! Hermit crabs may get out of their shell to change into a new shell or even get out to eat some lettuce or drink water from a water absorbed sponge. During that process who knows what the hamsters would do to the hermit crab. They're not meant to be in the same cage!
If hermit crabs had tongues they would have had either a bigger head or their tongue would stick out.Do you know how a butterfly eats? Well a hermit crab uses the same way to eat food, his tongue is a straw!
They change shells because the hermit crabs will grow like us humans. Just imagine that if you were a human and had a shell, you would want to change right?? They like alot of differetnt colors and styles. They outgrow their own shells and need new ones once and awhile. :) I own three myself. I hop my info helped alittle :D If you need anything else write it on here:))

It depends how long it has been from when he changed its shell. if it has been less than a day I wouldn't just in case but after a day it would be safe to.
The hermit crab would be endangered, and use other things to protect its abdomen, such as bottles, washed up shells, and other things they could find. So they would be more open to predators.
