Why would an intelligent person join a cult? well i dont know really. It all depends on many things.
One idea i might suggest is that he was forced into joining the cult due to his intellectual ability which they believe they can use.
Or he might have had a lonely life as a nerd, and wanted to do something with his life, when an opportunity of joining a cult just pops up.
