The main reason is that it is too close to the Sun. The heat renders the planet unihabitable. Also, the year is very short, which would mean severe weather changes, which could render us sick.
You would say that you lived in the US: "I lived in the US." 'Were' makes the verb to live passive which would suggest that someone lived you, which is impossible.

The heavy metal "mercury" is poisonous to us, but may not be to an alien. The planet Mercury is extremely hot and dry, so there would not be much chance for life as we know it. Life as we *don't* know it could find Mercury a comfortable place to live, for all we know.
Anyone with sufficient funds to live in the US permanently and without doing any jobs would have to be very wealthy. It is possible for someone that is born wealthy to live in the US and not work, if they have sufficient funds to support themselves. Without sufficient funds a person would have to work.

It would not be possible to modify Neptune for us to live on. It's a gas planet, so has no surface like that of the earth. It's also too far from the sun to support life, way too cold and dark.
Late 19th Century immigration to the US would not have been possible with the US having a flexible and mostly welcoming attitude to immigrants. It also would not have been possible without the US having a need for immigrants to come in and work on reconstruction projects.
Yes. The American Military recognises Wicca (one of the forms of Paganism - sometimes known as witchcraft) as a ligitimate religious choice. I doubt the military would ligitimize something that was illeagle in the US.
