There is a possibility that his best friend's wife was hiding out behind a bush in the rain because she could be trying to connect with him and he may well not have known she was even out there. Just because his shirt was unbuttoned doesn't mean that she was ever in the house and he could have been relaxing or getting ready for bed. It is also impossible that he was lying and when they heard you she snuck out and hid behind the bushes, but the fact she came out of the bushes and the rain and not saying a word may still mean that this man did not know she was there. The only way you are going to get an answer is by talking to both of them.
