Mostly to reduce swelling. For example, a sore throat. Sore throats can be cured with the constant rinsing of salt water.

My opinion is that it is not safe to use a needle yourself, you could cause an infection and then you really would be in pain. Try warm rinsing your mouth with warm salt water. It is amazing how healing that can be. It could "pop" this just by rinsing with the warm salt water. Continue rinsing several times a day before and after it has popped. Warm salt water like this is very healing in the mouth....just dont swallow it.
That is just simply swelling, swish your mouth with salt water.
To reduce swelling while your fresh tongue piercing is healing, a combo of techniques should be employed. Sucking on ice can be a huge help by itself. Combine this with an anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen will keep discomfort to a minimum. Also, to prevent irritation, water down your Listerine to half water, half mouth wash. Pure Listerine is much too strong for a fresh wound and can cause irritation and delay healing. Also, make sure to rinse your mouth out with cool water after drinking anything with sugar in it, or snacking.
You should use an alcohol free mouthwash after you eat or drink anything besides bottled water. Keep ice on it and use ibuprofen to reduce swelling. You should not do anything with it while it is healing besides keeping it clean, and in your mouth.
Take it out and switch to a wider ring or long bar. Do warm water soaks to reduce the swelling.
