because then it would explode..... because even the slightest bit of water that touches sodium can cause a huge reaction and make it explode.

It would explode. The reaction is strongly exothermic and quite violent, it produces Hydrogen, which is very flammable, and Sodium Hydroxide, which is very caustic.
