Washington was a proven leader by the time of the first presidential election. Before the revolutionary war he served with distinction in the Continental Congesses, but became a national hero by leading the Continental forces to victory in a long war.
Probably more impressive than his military strategy was his ability to keep his army supplied and able to fight.
Under the new constitution, it was the Electoral College that was designed to choose the new president. George Washington served as president from 1789 to 1797.
