A general purpose software is one which is developed for people not for any particular firm. Example of general purpose software are adobe flash, microsoft word, microsoft office etc.

The software might be written to do one job, used once and never used again. Lots of software can be used over and over and for many different things, like word processors for creating a range of different kinds of documents. Once it was run and did its job it might never be needed again and no one else would have a use for it.
