According to http://www.installdr.com/Harnesses/GM-Wiring.pdf the connector for the rear speakers is separate from the front speakers. If the connector for the rear speakers is loose or disconnected, the rear speakers would not work while the front ones will. The amp in the head unit (dashboard radio) powers the front door speakers. The rear door speakers and roof (pillar) speakers in the rear are powered by a second amp under the drivers seat. Either this amp is bad or is not hooked up.

The 2002 Chevy Suburban features speakers which are 6 and a half inches. This size applies to both front and rear speakers.
The back speakers are 10x4 or 4x10. The front corners are 3 1/2
The front door speakers in a 1997 Chevrolet Suburban measure 6 3/4 inches. The rear door speakers also measure 6 3/4 inches.
The front speakers in a 2002 Chevrolet Suburban measure 6 1/2 inches and are located in the doors. The rear speakers also measure 6 1/2 inches.
The first three speakers you want to buy are your subwoofer and the 2 left and right front speakers. Next you will want to get the 2 left and right back speaker and then the center front and center back speakers.

If both front speakers are not working, then either the fade control is set to rear speakers only, or the front speaker plug has fallen out - very unlikely. Check the fade control, first. Or, I suppose a particularly loud blast of music could blow both speakers at once . . .
The speakers in the front door are 5 1/4-inch two-way speakers. The speakers in the kick panel are 6 1/2 inches. The rear speakers are 6 3/4 inches.
