Most cardinals do not really want to be pope as it entails massive amounts of responsibility. They accept the position only because they consider it as God's will. Eugenio Pacelli (Pope Pius XII) upon being elected said: "I do not deserve this honor. I accept it as a cross".

Pius also requested that the cardinals vote one more time to verify he was the chosen one before he accepted the position as pope.
