The original line up was Jimi Hendrix, Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell. I believe that after Redding left a few Experience gigs were played with Billy Cox on bass instead.
According to what i read/heard, Hendrix played Noel Redding,s Fender Precision bass guitar on "All Along The Watchtower. Apparently, this occurred because Redding had grew tired of Hendrix,s perfectionism in the recording studio, & that Hendrix would frequently have a group of friends/hangers-on in the recording studio with him when he recorded, which resulted in little or no work being done. Therefore, Noel Redding allegedly walked out of the studio & went drinking, while Jimi Hendrix recorded "ALL Along The Watchtower".

The "Jimi Hendrix Experience" was a band created by Chas Chandler which was focussed on Jimi Hendrix to give him the means to get his music out to the people, with Mitch Mitchell on drums and Noel Redding on bass, both formidable instrumentalists in their own right. Jimi (James Marshall) Hendrix was a unique talent. He had everything against him as a kid, but inspite of everything, he learned guitar and developed his own distinctive sound and style. He was left handed, had long fingers and was able to use his thumb as well. He wrote most of his own material and incorporated some brilliant harmonies between instruments and vocals.
